Tuesday, April 5. Today marks the conclusion of our regular updates on the state of our sakura, or cherry blossoms. The pink and white blooms have started to fade in vibrancy and their petals have started to adorn Portland Japanese Garden in a delicate snow. Now, the Garden is ready for the full embrace of the spring. The largest garden, the Strolling Pond Garden [ chisen kaiyu shiki teien] consists of Upper and Lower Ponds connected by a flowing stream. The Upper Pond features the iconic Moon Bridge, while the Lower Pond has a Zig-Zag bridge [ yatsuhashi] which weaves through beds of Japanese iris against the backdrop of the stunning Heavenly Falls. The Natural Garden was created to encourage visitors to rest and reflect on the essence and brevity of life. It is the most contemporary of the original five gardens, done in a style referred to as zoki no niwa, and includes many plants not traditionally associated with Japanese gardens.
