The Marlin 39 came with a hard rubber buttplate. The Model 39 came in 3 serial number ranges. The first had no letter prefix like your gun and over 12000 were made going by observed serial numbers. It is thought this range covers 1922 to 1925. The next set of numbers is with an S prefix and they go up to the S17000 range.

This very well could be a Model 39 as Brophy lists the high for the non-prefix guns at nearly 13,000. So, this would probably be about a 1925 gun. Jwmtx: Model 39's made between 1921 and 1925 had no serial number prefix.As I understand it the "S" prefix is not used in dating a model 39. I'm aware of the devices on the net that allow entry of the prefix and or the serial numbers, but for some reason these do not work for the model 39. Keep in mind I'm referring to original model 39, NOT the 39A. It's not a a 1959 build, but it may be a 1929 build.
