May 5, 2020 · Reading Thunderwave now and looking at the rules in the PHB Chapter 10 Casting a Spell, it appears to me that Thunderwave encompasses 9 squares on a 5 foot grid and that at least one side has to be adjacent to the square that the caster is in. Whether your square is included in the area is up to you regardless of where the spell is centered.

The way we use it, you need to maneuver around enemies and get in the middle of the fray, while at the same time coordinating allies so they don't get into you vicinity.
